Azure Fundamentals AZ-900 Complete Guide

A complete study guide for the Microsoft Azure Fundamentals AZ-900 exam. Covers cloud concepts, Azure services, security, and pricing.

What Is AZ-900

The Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) certification validates foundational knowledge of cloud services and how those services are provided with Microsoft Azure. The exam has approximately 45 questions, an 85-minute time limit, and requires a 70% passing score. It is designed for candidates who are just beginning to work with cloud-based solutions and services.

Exam Domains

The exam covers three main domains: Describe cloud concepts (25-30%), Describe Azure architecture and services (35-40%), and Describe Azure management and governance (30-35%). The cloud concepts domain covers IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, public/private/hybrid cloud models, and the shared responsibility model.

Core Azure Services

Key services to know include: Compute (Virtual Machines, App Service, Azure Functions, Azure Kubernetes Service), Networking (Virtual Network, Load Balancer, VPN Gateway, Application Gateway), Storage (Blob Storage, File Storage, Queue Storage, Table Storage), and Databases (Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB, Azure Database for MySQL/PostgreSQL).

Security and Compliance

Understand Azure Active Directory (now Microsoft Entra ID), role-based access control (RBAC), network security groups, Azure Firewall, and Azure DDoS Protection. Know the difference between authentication and authorization. Be familiar with compliance offerings like Azure Policy, Azure Blueprints, and the Trust Center.

Study Plan

AZ-900 can be prepared in 2-3 weeks of focused study. Use Microsoft Learn free modules, which cover all exam objectives. Take practice tests to identify weak areas. Focus on understanding the purpose and use cases of services rather than deep technical configurations. This is a conceptual exam, not a hands-on technical exam.
