AWS Solutions Architect Associate SAA-C03 Exam Tips
Practical tips and strategies for passing the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam. Domain breakdown, common pitfalls, and what to focus on.
About the SAA-C03 Exam
The AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate (SAA-C03) validates your ability to design distributed systems on AWS. It has 65 questions, a 130-minute time limit, and requires a 72% passing score. The four domains are: Secure Architectures (30%), Resilient Architectures (26%), High-Performing Architectures (24%), and Cost-Optimized Architectures (20%).
Most Tested Topics
Expect heavy coverage of VPC design (subnets, NACLs, security groups), S3 storage classes and lifecycle policies, EC2 instance types and Auto Scaling, RDS Multi-AZ vs Read Replicas, CloudFront distributions, and IAM policies. Understanding the differences between SQS, SNS, and EventBridge is frequently tested. Know when to use each database service (RDS, DynamoDB, Aurora, ElastiCache, Redshift).
Architecture Patterns
The exam tests your ability to choose the right architecture. Key patterns include: multi-tier web applications, serverless architectures with API Gateway and Lambda, event-driven processing with SQS and SNS, data lake architectures with S3 and Athena, and disaster recovery strategies (backup/restore, pilot light, warm standby, multi-site active-active).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Do not confuse Multi-AZ (high availability) with Read Replicas (read scaling). Remember that S3 is eventually consistent for overwrite PUTs and DELETEs. Do not overlook cost implications. Many wrong answers are technically possible but not cost-optimized. Always consider the least-privilege principle for IAM questions.
Preparation Resources
Use a combination of video courses, hands-on labs, and practice exams. Build at least one project on AWS to solidify your understanding. Take timed practice exams to build stamina for the 130-minute test. Review every incorrect answer thoroughly to understand why the correct answer is right and why yours was wrong.
